Cooling Tower Applications

There are many types of Cooling Tower Applications specific to Steam Boilers and Hot Water Boiler systems.  Some systems create steam, while others simply heat water for circulation or distribution.  There are high-pressure systems as well as low-pressure systems, and there are systems that run on gas, or electricity, or fuel oil, etc.  Most industrial Boilers and Hot Water Heaters are constructed of carbon steel, however some have copper alloy and/or stainless steel components.

Cooling towers are subjected to harsh conditions and they operate almost continuously.  Because of this, it is extremely important to properly maintain these systems and the water that flows through them.  Failure to properly treat the water and maintain the systems will reduce efficiencies and increase operational costs (energy costs, maintenance costs, and replacement costs).

The greatest threats to cooling towers and associated equipment are Scale and Corrosion.  Scale consists of sparingly soluble salts including hardness based scales (calcium, magnesium), silica scale or silicate scales. Scaling causes significant increases in energy costs, as heat transfer efficiently is dramatically reduced. Even 1/64 of an inch of scale can decrease heat transfer efficiency 15%.  The primary cause of corrosion is high dissolved salts (conductivity), suspended solids or corrosive properties of feed-water.

Effective Corrosion Control requires the following:

  • Regular monitoring of operation
  • Minimize stresses during start-up
  • Maintain the proper pH and alkalinity levels
  • Maintain sufficient chemical corrosion control
  • Remove feed-water contaminates
  • Monitor and control feed-water quality
  • Perform regular inspections during service down-time

Effective Scale Control Program:

  • Regular monitoring of operation
  • Scale Inhibitors (phosphate and/or phosphonate)
  • Dispersant
  • Filters to remove particulates
  • Perform regular inspections during service down-time

Typically, the most cost effective solution for controlling Scale is to implement a chemical treatment program using Scale Inhibitors (phosphonate/phosphate & polymer) in conjunction with a Dispersant.  Successful programs include monitoring and regular testing of the water quality to validate the effectiveness of the chemicals being used. Monitoring must also include inspection and testing of the chemical pumps and conductivity meters that are being used.
